Using Ghost 10 to "image" a vista drive

message unavailable

Hi all,
The bootable Ghost 10 CD has the ability to make an image (Ghost 9 could only restore an image).
When I tried to make an image of my laptop that had Vista on it, it complained that the drive "could not be locked".
I booted up an old CD image I had of Ghost 2003 and that didn't complain, but that's using a DOS interface/boot.
Any thoughts on how to make Ghost 10 deal with this "unlockable" drive or why it might be doing that?
Thanks!
- Steve

OK -- well I spoke too soon.
Even though I was able to make and image of the drive with Ghost 2003, when I restored the image to the same computer, I get a startup at the Windows Boot Manager that says (among other things...)
File:\Windows\System32\winload.exe
Status: 0xc00000e
Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.
So, maybe Vista's just not ready to be "imaged" with Ghost?
I'm open for suggestions for things to try here...

Using the -FDSP switch, force it to re-write the disk signature. This will enable you to boot the computer with the winload.exe problem.
Then, I run the fixntfs.exe utility in C:\boot with the -XP switch to rewrite the boot sector to be XP format. -- -- Andre Windows Connect | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta FAQ for MS AntiSpy http://www.geocities.com/marfer_mvp/FAQ_MSantispy.htm

Ghost 10 does NOT have the capability of creating an image when you boot from the "recovery" CD. It allows you to recover an image that you created while booted into Windows, where you "create" the image you later want to recover.
I also have that program.

Sure it does -- I've personally done it a number of times.
It's something that the Ghost 10 CD now lets you do that the Ghost 9 CD had greyed out:
Boot from the CD.
Go to "recover" from the recovery disk main page.
Go to "recover using a legacy ghost image"
This runs the Ghost 8.2 Corporate Edition
Then you can do: Local --> Disk --> To Image
With the Ghost 9 CD, you could only restore "From Image".
This lets us -- using this CD and not "Ghost 2003" which we used previously -- make an image of our XP load set hard disk for redistribution.
We're trying to figure out if we can do the same thing with Vista builds.

This is using the switch *with ghost*?
Or when booted into the non-booting Windows Boot Manager?

Please explain "exactly" how you get to this function when booting from the "Recovery" CD. Alas, I looked now three different times and do not see this option. Please give the path so I can see this also.

Even the help file says "nothing" about ***creating*** an image while booted up in the CD recovery mode.
This IS Ghost 10 we are talking about - right, and NOT the Ghost 2003 CD that comes included in the package along with Ghost 10.

Exactly:
Boot from the CD labelled "Norton Ghost 10.0" -- *not* the Norton Ghost 2003 CD.
This runs the "Starting Symantec Recovery Disk" (which I think is Windows PE, maybe?). Takes a while to boot.
Accept the license.
At the "Symantec Recovery Disk" screen.
Click "Recover" (below "Home")
On the "Recover Data on my Computer" screen, click "Recover using a legacy Ghost image"
This runs Ghost 8.2 Corporate Edition. The "Ghost 9.0" package would run "Ghost 8.0 Corporate"
If you've used Ghost before with this interface, you can do:
Local --> Disk --> To Image.

I'm
not surprised it's not in the "help". It's certainly not intuitive to insert a "recovery" CD to *make* and image.
But it's there. We've used it a number of times.
Honest.

I'm not surprised. It's *new* with the Ghost Corporate 8.2 with Ghost 10 -- Ghost 9 had "8.0".
I'm sure it's somewhat "unsupported" -- but it works.

Correct! The 10.0 CD.

If you get it to work, see if you can make a successful image of a vista HD and restore it.
That's my initial problem. ;-)

Steve,
To cure the winload problem you need to get into a bit of BCDEDIT! Boot your recovered PC with WinPE CD\boot path c:\windows\system32 bcdedit /store bcd (this shows you what's there already) you will see that the entries for device are not known do this: bcdedit /store bcd /set {bootmgr} device boot bcdedit /store bcd /set {default} device boot bcdedit /store bcd /set {default} osdevice boot
Reboot, that should do it Read more about bcdedit on Technet

Thanks.
I'll hang on to this after I get the next seed of Vista if the problem still occurs there.
(and it might not happen on a "clean" install -- the last time we tried this was on the "upgrade"-type install -- which is still a clean install, but leaving the XP remnants on board...)

I have made a successful image of 5270 using Ghost 10. I have also restored said image. I dual boot and created the image of the 5270 partition while I was booted into Win XP Professional. The next day I booted from the recovery CD and restored the Vista 5270 image.
The
operation worked fine.

Ah, this isn't how we were trying it.
We were only trying it booting from the Ghost 10 CD to *make* the image.
Not from making an image from an installed Ghost 10 when booted in Windows...
There's a difference.

Obviously yes.

Thanks you, my VGA is RADEON 9200SE, it's not onboard. I also have DVD-Rom. So I have to upgade the RAM to 1GB.
"Travis King" wrote in message

What kind of Radeon specifically is it? If it is a Radeon 9500 or up, you're good to go, but if it's below that or if it's onboard, I'd suggest you upgrade that also if possible. (That is if you want Aero Glass.) I also agree that you should at least double your RAM. 512MB is a lot in Windows XP, but in Vista, that's pretty much a minimum. Other than that, your computer should run Vista very well. Also, I'd recommend you have a DVD drive. (If not, a DVD burner.) If you have your 40 gig hard drive over half full right now, it might be a little cramped with Vista. Almost certainly. (I'm using an AMD Athlon XP 2200+ 1.8GHz, 512MB of RAM, nVidia GeForce 5500, 80GB hard drive and it's flying.)

It's a possibility... but it may not be a CTP. It still maybe an interim release... having said that, if Beta 2 (the CPP) is released in May, then one would presume that the April CTP will be also released to techy testers and possibly MSDN.

I have an Athlon XP 2400+ and AGP 4x, so I'd just have a bottleneck with that high of a graphics card anyway. (Especially the 7800.) While I know that most of any AGP 8x cards will support 4x, that'll just bring down the performance and bottleneck. My motherboard supports only up to a 266MHz FSB. (The 2nd revision of my board, however, supports 333, but mine's an older revision. It's the Asus A7V333 motherboard.) I have a 400-watt PSU (and just a CompUSA one at that.) That might be enough, but I don't know if I would want to push my luck. (I have two sticks of RAM - 3 soon, the CPU, FX5600, Creative Audigy soundcard, network card, 2 hard drives, 2 optical drives, a floppy drive, and three case fans already. I also have approximately eight USB devices connected to my computer right now.) The cost to buy that expensive of a video card for my computer would be more than it's worth, especially when on a budget like me I would probably have to spend the price of a new computer to really get what you want and what I want. (Because I wouldn't mind having a 6800 or a 7800.) We're talking a three-year-old computer here, and I would like to hold off to build a new computer until at least the first service pack of Vista is out. (Probably two years from now.) I also have been considering having a cheap partial rebuild done on my computer with just a few new components, (The motherboard, CPU, RAM) but I'd think it would be almost easier to wait a year or two and just build a whole new computer, especially when the computers are more ready for Vista than they are now. If Aero Glass runs poorly on my computer, I'll consider the partial rebuild, but if it runs well enough for my needs, I won't worry about it - at least for now. I have some sheets that I printed out that I will fill out where I will write some of the software I have that works and what doesn't. (Or what works but has problems.) I know there's some out there already, but some of them are not. "Zack Whittaker" wrote in message

True - they are bloody good cards! Having said that, it does come down to whether Nvidia will support LDDM drivers for them or not :o(

It's a possibility... but it may not be a CTP. It still maybe an interim release... having said that, if Beta 2 (the CPP) is released in May, then one would presume that the April CTP will be also released to techy testers and possibly MSDN.

When RC1?
"Andre Da Costa [Extended64]" wrote in message BETA 2 will be desguised as CTP, Jim Allchin made it clear in a CRN interview, CTPs for Vista until RC1. -- Andre Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta FAQ for MS AntiSpy http://www.geocities.com/marfer_mvp/FAQ_MSantispy.htm

If the next build released is NOT Beta 2, then one would presume that the next build will be released to techy testers and possibly MSDN.
Basically, we'll just have to wait and see :oP

It is April now and the next CTP (Community Tech Preview) of Windows Vista still a few weeks out. If you do not have access to the latest CTP (February CTP, Build 5308) you can still download WinFX and the Windows SDK and start developing WinFX applications on Windows XP. ------------------------------------------ Nevertheless we want to give you an idea what's coming up in terms of user interface changes and improvements. Have a look at the videos demonstrating present versions of Windows Vista below.
But User eXperience is not only about new features. As developers, we need to step back and rethink what is useable and user friendly, instead of just adding flashy effects. The Windows shell team has done a lot of background work and I want to present you an example how we are reworking dialogs in Windows Vista."
